YOUR STARTING POINT
SMP for women with a widening part: what to ask first.
A visible part can prompt a cosmetic question. Understanding the reason for the change comes first.

Describe the change without diagnosing it.
You might notice your part in overhead lighting or more scalp when your hair is tied back. Record when the change started, where you see it and whether it is progressing. AAD: hair-loss diagnosis and treatment explains that different causes need different assessments. New, sudden or unexplained loss, or a sore or inflamed scalp, deserves healthcare advice before cosmetic coverage.
Separate a density effect from growing hair.
SMP aims to reduce the visual contrast of scalp among existing hairs. It does not thicken each strand or treat the cause of hair loss. Bring photographs with your hair dry and styled as usual, and explain which length and part you want to keep. Our SMP density page connects those preferences to the consultation.
Keep the decision personal.
You do not need to change your hairstyle or commit to treatment to ask a question. Discuss the remaining hair, colour, existing scalp care and any future hair procedure. Ask to see examples relevant to your pattern rather than relying only on a shaved-head result. Suitability and the proposed coverage should be explained together.
Common questions.
Would I need to shave for density SMP?
Density work is assessed around existing hair and your preferred style. Ask exactly what preparation would be needed for your plan before shaving or changing your usual length.
Is SMP a solution for postpartum shedding?
Not automatically. AAD: hair shedding after childbirth explains that shedding after childbirth is often temporary. Seek appropriate assessment and allow the cause and course of the change to guide any cosmetic decision.
Can I continue medical treatment for hair loss?
Discuss your care with the prescribing clinician and the SMP practitioner. Do not stop prescribed treatment on your own. Timing and any preparation need to be coordinated for your situation.
What if I colour my hair or change my part?
Bring those plans to the consultation. Ask how the proposed pigment and coverage would relate to your usual colour, part and possible future styles; a result should not be judged in only one lighting setup.
What should I bring to the first appointment?
Bring ordinary, unfiltered photographs, relevant treatment history and your current hair-care routine. Ask whether to arrive without scalp concealer. Your questions can cover suitability, the intended effect, healing and the complete quote.
