AT-HOME CARE / SKIN & SCARS
Caring for a healed scar at home.
Begin with comfort, protection and a clearer understanding of what you want to change.

General education for everyday care and planning. For a fresh procedure, follow your practitioner’s individual aftercare instructions.
First, separate a healing wound from a healed scar.
A scar may be part of an injury, surgery or a much older experience. Before buying a product, establish whether the area is fully closed and whether your treating clinician has given you any ongoing instructions. This article concerns everyday care of healed skin; it is not a wound-care plan. A new, painful or changing area deserves medical advice before a cosmetic appointment.
Keep the everyday routine manageable.
For a healed scar exposed to daylight, the American Academy of Dermatology: wound care and scars recommends broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher after healing. Comfortable clothing can also make covering the area an easy choice. A simple routine you can maintain is more useful than repeatedly changing products because an advertisement promises to erase a scar.
Make a brief note of the products you already use and anything that irritates the area. Bring that list to an assessment. If you are considering silicone or another scar product, ask a pharmacist or treating clinician whether it fits the type and stage of your scar. Do not assume that a product for a new surgical scar is appropriate for every old mark.
Name the concern before choosing the solution.
Try describing what you notice without using a treatment name: “lighter than the surrounding skin,” “raised,” “a change in texture,” or “visible in this neckline.” Take an unfiltered photograph in ordinary light for your own reference. Keep the distance and lighting similar if you later compare images; a different angle can make a change look larger than it is.
Home care cannot promise to remove a scar. A professional conversation should distinguish appearance goals from symptoms that need healthcare. You can also choose to leave a comfortable scar as it is.
Discuss a plan that fits your scar.
At Wholesome Empire in Calgary, our scar and stretch-mark overview introduces the difference between revision and colour camouflage. For the best approach to your goals, talk with our professionals about suitability, realistic improvement, healing and the full quote. Ask which parts of your concern the proposed service would leave unchanged.
