AT-HOME CARE / SCALP & HAIR
Caring for a scalp scar after a hair transplant.
Your transplant team’s instructions come first. Cosmetic camouflage is a later, separate assessment.

General education for everyday care and planning. For a fresh procedure, follow your practitioner’s individual aftercare instructions.
Keep surgical aftercare with your surgical team.
FUT and FUE procedures can leave different scar patterns, and every recovery has its own context. Use the written instructions from your surgeon for washing, products, activity and follow-up. Do not start massage, needling, scar treatments or pigment procedures because an online timeline says you should be ready. A wound or new symptom needs the surgical team’s advice.
Organize the information for a later consultation.
Keep the surgery date, the type of procedure and any follow-up notes together. If you are considering SMP, ask your surgeon when cosmetic assessment would be reasonable and whether further surgery is planned. Readiness should be confirmed for your tissue, rather than assumed from a calendar.
When the area is healed, photographs at your normal haircut length can help explain your concern. A second view at a different length may be useful if you already have one; do not shave against surgical instructions to obtain it. Tell the practitioner how you prefer to wear your hair.
Protect healed skin without experimenting.
For a healed, exposed scar, the American Academy of Dermatology: wound care and scars recommends sun protection after healing. Ask the treating team which products and coverage fit your stage of recovery. New discomfort, opening or a concerning change is a reason to contact a healthcare professional, not cover the area with makeup or pigment.
Home grooming may change how visible a scar feels, but it does not establish whether the tissue can receive pigment. Keep those two decisions separate.
What to ask about scalp-scar SMP.
Our scalp and hair-transplant scar camouflage guide explains assessment of the scar and surrounding hair together. Cleveland Clinic: scalp micropigmentation describes SMP as a cosmetic pigment technique. It cannot remove scar tissue or recreate transplanted hair.
For the best plan for your goals, speak with our Calgary professionals after any necessary surgical clearance. Ask about colour contrast, texture that will remain, possible test work, review arrangements and how later transplant plans could affect the decision.
